Google: Outbound Links Are Not A Ranking Factor

In the Google Hangout from earlier this week, John Mueller filled us up with yes and nos to is this a ranking factor or not, hence all the stories here covering that hangout. At the 19 minute 53 second mark into the video, John said that external links, links on your web site that point to outside web sites (or outbound links) are not a ranking signal.

Our point of view, external links to other sites, so links from your site to other people’s sites isn’t specifically a ranking factor. But it can bring value to your content and that in turn can be relevant for us in search. And wether or not they are not followed, doesn’t really matter.

Number of nofollow links on a pge also reduce the amount of link juice left for other links on that page, though the link juice is not passed to the nofollow ones.

For example, their are 5 nofollow and 4 non nonfollow links already on the page before your link is placed. Each of the 5 followed links receives 1/(5+4) of the link juice of the page. After your link is placed you receive 1/10th of the total link juice of the page. However each of the nofollow links receives nothing.

So you see although nofollow links on a page don't get any link juice to them but their presence reduce the power that is passed to other non nofollowed links on the page.
